Founded in 1880 as one of the first coeducational colleges in Virginia, BC is affiliated with the Church of the Brethren. The Augusta Female Seminary was founded in 1842 by Rufus W. Bailey, who was also named principal. Among the first pupils was Mary Julia Baldwin, for whom the school was later named. In 1863 Ms. Baldwin was elected principal and remained principal until her death on July 2, 1897. Mary Baldwin has an enrollment of over 2,240 females and offers the Virginia Women's Institute of Leadership program with a foundation in liberal arts education.
