Founded in 1908, JMU has grown from a state normal and industrial school for women to today's coeducational comprehensive university with enrollment of over 16,970 in 2006. Founded in 1917, EMU is a fully accredited Christian liberal arts university. With over 1,400 students, there is representation from 35 states and 15 foreign countries of diverse cultures and faith. In addition to an undergraduate program with over 50 majors and minors, EMU offers a theological seminary and three graduate programs.

Established in 1967, BRCC operates within the Virginia Community College system and responds to the educational needs of the Central Shenandoah Valley. The college offers programs and courses of instruction through the associate degree level. Besides the Weyers Cave campus, BRCC also has centers located in Harrisonburg, Fishersville and Waynesboro.

Founded in 1880 as one of the first coeducational colleges in Virginia, BC is affiliated with the Church of the Brethren. BC is located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley just seven miles from the City of Harrisonburg. Approximately 1,100 men and women mainly from Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic States. Eighteen other states and seventeen countries are represented. BC offers majors in a wide array of fields, as well as academic concentrations, pre-professional programs, dual degree programs and teacher certification.

The Augusta Female Seminary was founded in 1842 by Rufus W. Bailey, who was also named principal. Among the first pupils was Mary Julia Baldwin, for whom the school was later named. In 1863 Ms. Baldwin was elected principal and remained principal until her death on July 2, 1897. Mary Baldwin has an enrollment of over 2,240 females and offers the Virginia Women's Institute of Leadership program with a foundation in liberal arts education.
